MAURITANIA. Sahara - a territory of great contrast. 75% of it is desert. North-west on the Morocco border the very tall dunes dive into the Atlantic Ocean forming a spectacular corridor. It’s even possible to drive on the beach at low tide. On this coast the Park of Banc d’Arguin is a marvellous and unique lagoon complex - a destination for thousands of different migratory birds of all species like flamingos and pelicans. The Imraguen fishermen sail the channels with particular skill in between the very many little sandy islands and it is possible to have a guided tour. The Mauritanian routes are not very well known and used because sometimes they can be difficult. They really test people and vehicles, but they offer a wonderful and unique spectacle. The dunes up north have covered the old oasis, the same ones that determined the history of the Saharan Empires in the past. Cinguetti is the legendary one, it was an important centre of culture, with libraries and old coranic schools. The ruins of Ouadane are suggestive and unreal. The Guelb Richat is an extraordinary volcanic cone originated from magma eruptions. Sailing on the infinite sea of dunes pointing south-east, it is possible to reach Dhar Tichit cliffs. Today it is well known because of the difficulty of the passages for the Paris-Dakar Rally drivers. In the past it was important because it was a centre for the caravans and 4,000 years ago was home to a Neolithic population. At the bottom of Dhar Tichit cliffs there is a Neolithic site in the Aouker sand, not far from where a big lake was. The offroad route is on several types of sand and rocks, it’s amusing and satisfying because it takes you to see some of the natural beauty like the Maghrouga monolith carved by the wind or even to meet the local Mauri nomads and not forgetting the wonderful landscapes.
